Melancholy

Summary: The Noah Clan has mostly recovered from the battles on the Ark. However, Tiki's new habit of drinking alone at midnight is only one of the things worrying Devit.
Prompt: 012. Melancholy
Disclaimer: The D. Gray-man series and characters don't belong to me.
Notes: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cattheterrible for beta reading.

Devit padded down the hallway, nervous with only a single wavering candle to light his way. Barefoot, he slid along the kitchen wall without a sound. He set the candle down a few feet away from the dining room door, edged the rest of the way over, and peered in.

There was Tiki. He sat at the far end of the enormous circular dining room table, surrounded by an ungodly number of wine bottles that caught the light of a candelabra. Tiki had a hand to his forehead, and with the other he swirled the contents of a wine glass. Devit hoped he hadn’t gotten too drunk yet.

Devit kept watching, and although he must have been silhouetted against the faint glow of his candle, Tiki was turned away, his hand over his eyes. He didn’t drink, only fooled with his wine glass for what must have been a couple minutes. Devit wanted to yell into the room, but the space, the silence, and the dark were too oppressive. Still, he got impatient waiting for Tiki to notice him, and, wondering if he should leave, go back to bed, cleared his throat and said “Hey” in a low voice.

With a start, Tiki looked up. Devit retrieved his candle and entered the dining room. He eyed Tiki’s liquor bottles and curled his lip. Tiki silently watched him approach. He wore a formal white shirt, and his long hair was tied back in a ponytail. Devit was no expert, but he didn’t think Tiki looked that drunk. He walked behind Tiki’s chair and set his lone candle by the wine bottles. “What’re you doing?” he asked. His left arm twinged; he rubbed at it with his good hand.

“Drinking,” said Tiki, no overt emotion in his voice.

“Yeah, I can see that. I’ve also been able to tell you’ve been doing it damn near every night for the past two weeks.”

“You’re keeping a tight watch on me, twin,” said Tiki.

Devit had only discovered Tiki’s drinking by accident. He’d dragged himself out of bed to make a midnight run to the kitchen for two glasses of water. Warned by the clinking of glass, he’d hidden the candle flame, snuck the rest of the way down the hall, and caught sight of Tiki carrying wine bottles into the dining room.

“Why are you drinking here?” demanded Devit. “And why the fuck are you drinking alone?”

Devit

Tiki shrugged and averted his gaze. “Maybe I’m tired of bars.”

Tiki had always gone out to drink, before. Even when they stayed in the Edo mansion, there were places in Japan where the semblance of ordinary human life continued. There were places to go out drinking. After finding Tiki, hearing wine poured into a glass, Devit had found water as quietly as he could, not wanting to alert Tiki to his presence. He would have spoken to Tiki that night, he told himself, except that Tiki’s behavior puzzled him too much. Devit woke up at midnight the next night, and the next, to discover that Tiki’s solitary drinking continued. What the fuck are you doing, Devit wanted to scream at him, but it took him days to overcome his embarrassment on Tiki’s behalf and speak up.

Standing near Tiki’s chair, Devit gave a loud sigh. “I always knew you were a hopeless drunk, but this is….” This is just sad, he wanted to say, but if he didn’t pull together some semblance of tact, Tiki might refuse to talk to him. “This is about what happened on the old Ark, isn’t it.”

Tiki drained the rest of his wine glass. “You’re altogether too smart sometimes.”

Devit decided that this was close enough to an actual compliment that he could feel good about it. “It’s about time you noticed. Now tell me why.” To his annoyance, Tiki poured himself another glass of wine. Devit took the bottle from him and sniffed the top; he wrinkled his nose.

“You want any?” asked Tiki.

“No!” said Devit, setting the bottle down out of Tiki’s reach. “If you want to drink with me, take me to a bar or something. This is fucking depressing.” He waved his arm to indicate Tiki and his bottles. “I’m not here to get drunk.”

Tiki sipped from his drink, looking up at Devit. “Are you going to leave me alone, or are you going to sit down?”

Frowning, Devit dragged a chair closer to Tiki and sat. He clasped his hands together (careful of his left hand) and leaned forward. In a barely audible voice, he asked, “So… what was it like, losing what made you part of Noah’s family?” He was half-frightened of the answer, but he had to ask that question if he didn’t want Tiki to evade the subject.

Tiki winced. “It wasn’t for very long, and I was unconscious,” he said.

“Did it hurt?” asked Devit.

“I guess. But that’s all over now—it’s nothing serious.” Tiki gave a laugh and took another draught of wine. “Nothing you should worry about.”

This put Devit over the edge into anger. “I am worried,” he said without thinking, then bit his lip.

Tiki finally looked him in the eye again. “That’s thoughtful of you,” he said, and he didn’t sound sarcastic.

“I didn’t mean for you, dumbass. You got better, and good thing too. I meant… it’s fucking dangerous for us, if Allen can destroy the powers of Noah.” Devit sat back in his chair, kneading at the fingers of his left hand. Had he just admitted to fear? He suspected he had, and hated it.

“He didn’t destroy mine,” said Tiki.

If only Tiki would fucking treat what had happened with all the seriousness it deserved, thought Devit. “Yeah, no thanks to you!” he yelled, his voice ringing loud in the wide space and the darkness of the late hour.

Tiki gave an infuriating half shrug. Devit clenched his fists, even though it made pain shoot up his left forearm, and jumped to his feet. “What exactly were you planning to do? Were you gonna go live with your wandering hobo friends for the rest of your life? Gonna come back to us so the Earl and Rhode could figure out what to do with you? Maybe go off with Allen, I’m sure his Exorcist friends would be delighted to meet you…. Tiki, what the fuck were you thinking?”

His brow furrowed, Tiki had regarded Devit with a distant look in his eyes during his tirade. “I don’t know what I was thinking,” he said quietly after the silence had stretched for too long.

“Obviously,” muttered Devit. You weren’t. He fell back into his chair. Tiki’s response didn’t satisfy him—he still wanted to know why. Why had Tiki warned Rhode off when she tried to save him? A twisted sense of fair play? Or something else?

“It’s not as if it’ll happen again,” said Tiki, and Devit felt a stab of fear.

Yeah, you’re the one who recovered from Allen’s attack. You felt it once and you’re past it now, injured but still one of Noah's family. Who’s to say it's not gonna be permanent for the rest of us? Devit stared at the dark of the floor. It had fucking better not happen again.

Devit had lain awake at night, thinking about the half-death that had nearly come to Tiki. Realizing the possibility that it could happen to any one of them. Not that it would, not that he and Jasdero would slip up or be stupid like Tiki, but the possibility was there, and that was frightening enough.

Tiki drained another glass of wine. Devit glanced up at him, looking for any sign that something had changed. A change deeper than Tiki’s longer hair, deeper than his air of melancholy. There was nothing that he could see.

“Tiki,” he said. Tiki met his eyes. “If that ever….” He swallowed. “If that ever happens to us, and we lose our Noah selves for real, promise… promise you’ll kill us.”

Tiki’s eyes widened. “I can’t do that,” he said.

“Yes you can. Killing is what you do,” Devit said roughly.

Tiki examined the bottom of his drained glass. “Not killing you. As tempting as you make it sometimes.”

Devit ignored Tiki’s misplaced attempt at levity. “But… but the thing is… we….” He started to explain, but had to look away, to the deep shadows in the corner. Devit felt like he and Tiki had spent the entire night not quite meeting each other’s eyes. Don’t fucking make me explain it, Tiki. As horrifying as the thought of Tiki losing his Noah self was, it was different for him. He had another life, where he lived as an ordinary human. Devit thought it was a stupid life, but the point was, Tiki had a place to go if he screwed up and lost his life as a Noah. Here or there, Tiki had the ability to fit in.

And that was the last thing Devit and Jasdero had.

Take their home away from them, and they didn’t fucking have anywhere.

Devit could tell that Tiki didn’t get it. “Just…just promise, okay?” You goddamn drunk.

“Is that what you would have done for me if I’d… if that had happened to me?”

“I would've kicked you in the face for being a dumbass,” said Devit. When Tiki reached for a wine bottle, he snatched it by its neck and let it fall to the floor on the far side of his chair. “Now answer my goddamn question! This is kind of important!”

Tiki set his wine glass down. “My answer is no.”

“Fine!” screamed Devit. He stood. “We can do it ourselves.” Unless, after losing their Noah powers, he and Jasdero reconsidered and went on living. Between the Exorcists and the Noah Clan—hell, and all the rest of humanity—he was sure they’d regret it.

They weren’t going back. If they were going to lose the powers they so relied on—hell, they didn’t even keep real bullets in their guns—they were going to lose everything.

As Devit stormed past Tiki’s chair, Tiki reached out and grabbed his pajama sleeve. Brought up short, Devit bared his teeth at Tiki in a false smile. And you can go on drinking alone, he thought.

“Devit,” said Tiki, and there was hint of amusement beneath his serious tone, “don’t you think it would be better to promise not to let it happen to you in the first place?”

Devit’s eyes widened. “Uh… that would be better,” he said.

Tiki smiled at him. “Then I’m promising you and Jasdero that.”

Devit nodded, unable to speak for a brief moment. He removed Tiki’s hand from his sleeve. “Now go to a goddamned bar. Or go to bed. Your choice.” Devit backtracked for his candle.

There were still a couple bottles of alcohol near Tiki. Tiki tried to reach for the larger one; Devit, candle in hand, elbowed the bottle over so it rolled away. He lifted his left hand and shook it. “I need my sleep too, you know—we’re still recovering ourselves. If you keep up this drinking in the house at midnight habit, I’ll fucking kill you. Just wanted you to know.”

“I was going to put it away,” said Tiki, pushing his chair back and getting to his feet with a tired sigh. He looked worn out, still, but since his promise to Devit his face had held a more confident air.

Devit grinned at Tiki. Good thing he’d bothered to speak up tonight, now he could stop checking what Tiki was doing in the dining room every single night. Well, maybe he’d check tomorrow just to be sure.

“You mind helping?” asked Tiki, a couple bottles in one hand and his wine glass in the other.

“Fuck you.” Devit left the dining room in the faint glow of a candle that dripped black wax. It illuminated his grin as he walked the hallways back to his and Jasdero’s room.

Jasdero peeked out from his covers. “Hi there! Took you longer this time?”

Devit stepped over a pile of clothes and set the candle on the dresser between their beds, next to Jasdero’s headband, which was glowing with a different sort of light. The light reflected from Jasdero’s eyes, cast slight shadows from his stigmata. “Yeah, I decided I had to talk to Tiki. That guy has some problems.” Devit brightened. “I think I cheered him up.”

“Hee! Nice of you!” Jasdero closed his eyes and pulled the covers over his head.

Nice for us all, thought Devit. “G’night again.”

He blew out the candle, and they were asleep.

Ooh very nice. I like the atmosphere and the interaction between the two Noahs. Tyki promising not to let the same happen to the twins was very touching.

Beautiful story!

Thank you! I'm glad you liked those elements.

I think that losing one's Noah self would be pretty traumatizing. Tiki was lucky. (Perfect icon there...)

[identity profile] candelaria.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww Tyki~ Devit~ D: This is good, I like middle-ground, because srsly we have no idea what happened in between the Ark incident and Tyki suddenly showing up again at that ball, so I really enjoyed this. Also the fact that they're genuinely scared to lose their Noah? A half-death? I don't know, that's just awesome. Family bonding and all that I guess. XD Nice to see Devit's gruff sort-of caring side though...can't have Tyki sulking around being all emo over what could have been but never happened.

Love this! <3

Thanks for the comment and thoughts!! There are a lot of gaps in our knowledge of what the Noahs are doing at a given time, what their pasts were like, who half of them are...

Losing one's Noah-ness might be like Allen losing his Innocence. (I liked the nice little parallel of Allen (almost) doing to Tiki what Tiki (almost) did to him when he supposedly destroyed Allen's arm.) I imagine it would be even more extreme for the Noahs, since it's a part of who they are, not something they have. It's hard to tell, since Tiki wasn't conscious after Allen's sword attack. Tiki might be relatively okay, since he likes being a hobo, but I bet it would be traumatic on some level. And it would downright SUCK for any other Noah who got de-Noahed. XD

It was great fun writing the character interaction here. :3

I'm glad you like it!

[identity profile] candelaria.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
haha you're welcome. Noah fic isn't something I come by very often and yours is always good. X) I only hope the remaining half are as cool as the ones already there.

Huh. I never thought of it that way, that's a good theory. :O I guess for the Noah its an actual, physical thing...possibly genetic? I wonder...does it just HAPPEN and the power is so amazing they just accept it?

I think Tyki probably just had shock trauma, like 'oh man that was a close call' sort of trauma. And yes, haha he loves the hobo life...wonder what the upper class ladies he's supposed to be impressing suddenly come across him eating their expensive, imported koi right out of their fishponds? XDDD What happens if they DO get fully de-Noahed though...terrible as it sounds I kind of want it to happen to SOMEONE so I can see how they handle it.

Character interaction is always the best part of any story, so you're very welcome. <3

[identity profile] symbolism-egg.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! There needs to be more Noah fic--especially fic about Jasdevi. (But I have a couple fic recs! I recently discovered two fics concerning Tiki's recovery from his fully-awakened monster self: yang/yin (http://community.livejournal.com/eiasraintales/17230.html) by [livejournal.com profile] empath_eia and Without You (http://community.livejournal.com/dgray_flashfic/30085.html#cutid1) by [profile] nagaina_ryuuoh. I read them and was very impressed. The second one is particularly moving. You should check them out if you haven't already--and the writers' other fics, at least some of which also feature Tiki and/or Rhode.)

During her first appearance, Rhode told Allen that the Noah Clan inherited Noah's genes. Of course, if DGray is based off Biblical literalism, then everyone has inherited Noah's genes. Even if it isn't, the genes must have spread through a lot of humanity by now, and since the Noahs all come from different places it's not like there's a certain group predisposed to Noah-ness. There must be something else going on too.

We only have Skinn's flashback to refer to, but it seems like a partly physical change. He didn't have a moment where he got to choose whether to become a Noah, though, so I'm guessing it's not a matter of choice...? Unless Tiki resisted becoming a Noah, resulting in a partial awakening and a dormant tentacle-monster...? That would be interesting.

Yeah, it was probably shock. Another sign that it was very traumatic. That's why Tiki took up drinking alone at midnight, even if he recovered quickly from his loss. Someone losing their Noah-ness would be the perfect angst plotline, like Tiki's halfway was. (I was hoping for Rhode to stab a lot more people after that incident. I mean, she had an actual excuse for it!) Can you imagine if one of the twins were de-Noahed? It would be HORRIBLE. Good thing I don't feel like writing angst. XD You're right, though, it would be fascinating if it happened in the manga. Would the Earl kill them? Let them live? I hope it wouldn't be solved by Allen saying, "Well, you're good now, come with me! :D" because that would be too simple.

[identity profile] candelaria.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely, definitely. Why do all these awesome characters get left out? D: I swear the majority of fic revolves around Allen, Kanda, Lavi and Lenalee or some semblance of it. Which is all well and good until you want variety. |D Ooh, thanks for those, I'll check them out! >D

Well Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. And Noah put a curse on Ham's son Canaan. I don't know where Hoshino is going with this, but I think the Noah are descendants of the cursed line. One line in the article that convinced me of that was this: “Mar Ephrem the Syrian said: When Noah awoke and was told what Canaan did. . .Noah said, ‘Cursed be Canaan and may God make his face black,’ and immediately the face of Canaan changed; so did of his father Ham, and their white faces became black and dark and their color changed.”

If that doesn't sound like the Hoshino's Noahs I don't know what does. :O I think the Noah are the descendants of Canaan, who was probably out for revenge after that, which is why they're out to destroy God/the world with the Earl.

...I have too much time on my hands. XD I think on some level Tyki might have resisted the change. He seems like the kind to fight back against any sudden changes. Which would explain the dormant tentacle monster lying in wake.

Oh god the angst. For the twins it'd be like losing MORE than half of yourself, because their twin is also technically their other half too. Which reminds me of this ongoing angsty comic of the twins I saw on a Japanese fanart site...I can't remember the whole plot, but at one point Devit shoots Jasdero and when the Noah cry, only one side of their face leaks tears. D: Aaagh the angst! hahaha knowing Allen he might try something of the sort, he's that kind of person. Though I have to wonder what the Earl would do...it'd definitely be interesting to find out. D:

[identity profile] symbolism-egg.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's understandable because they're the main characters, but it's frustrating because I'm not that interested in reading about them (unless they're interacting with side characters I like). But the side characters have so much story potential!

Hmm, that's an interesting connection. But then, Old Testament God also wanted to destroy humanity, so the Noah Clan is pretty much in line with that. Oh yeah, in Ch. 78 the Earl says "This (= the Ark) was the place where Noah escaped the flood and created the ancestors of the second human race. It's your original birthplace...Noah's Ark is humanity's home." So it's not Biblical literalism, it's "We made a bunch of new humans." So not everyone is necessarily descended from Noah, although his family's genes would still be scattered after thousands of years. XD I'm not sure if this actually tells us anything about the Noah Clan.

Wow, that's angst, right there. How did I miss this fansite? And do you have a link?

[identity profile] candelaria.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah they're the main characters and don't get me wrong, I love them and think they're awesome, but the side characters are just as cool and I'd love to read more about them. ;__; Though I find a lot of times in this fandom, people have the interest but are just waiting for someone ELSE to write it. |D;

True that. But God DID destroy humanity with the Great Flood and scatter the Innocence so...I wonder where Hoshino's going with this. XD I really want to know what the hell that kind of technology was doing in Noah's time. I bet the Earl gave it to them. Considering the Ark is like a city I'm not surprised people live there. I'm not so sure it does, haha. Just that they're different from everyone else. XDDD

That it is. This is the link to the comic. X) It's made of so much angst and win.

[identity profile] symbolism-egg.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
I have the bad habit of totally ignoring the main characters and fixating on certain side characters. XD Not for all series, but at this point in DGray I'm mostly about the side characters. However, I do love Allen as a main character and enjoy writing about him if he's interacting with Rhode, or Link, or Jasdevi.

The Old Ark, which had almost finished downloading, contained a city, so I imagine the complete Ark would be pretty vast. Alternate dimensions are a great place to store bits of the world when it's due to be destroyed. I hope Hoshino does something cool, because ignorant manga artists screwing with theology can be pretty cracktastic awesome if they pull it off. XD

Ohhhh, thank you so much!! Lol, invisiDero. Unique take on things.

[identity profile] candelaria.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
haha I don't all that much unless the side characters are really cool, like they are in DGray and the love they get is minimal. D: I think Allen's one of the best main characters ever, I adore him so. <3

The complete Ark would probably be a world in and of itself. Though I don't know what the Noah will do once the world is gone...there's only 13 of them after all. I expect they might get bored, especially the twins. XD I hope so too, Hoshino's doing a great job so far and I'd hate for everything to suddenly go downhill. D:<

X) You're welcome. It's different, yeah and...god the part where Devi shoots Dero, I wibbled and died a little on the inside. The angst, the BONDS, omg the comic is so long but it's so epic. <3

[identity profile] symbolism-egg.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
Allen's so gentlemanly, which is rare for a shounen hero. They almost never speak with "boku," either! I also love that Hoshino took the concept of "clown" and made it kick-ass and awesome. If you have a moment I can also go on about clowns, Christ figures, and classics of 20th-century Japanese literature. But usually I'm like main characters, whatever...HEY LOOK IT'S AN IMAGE OF HAKU JASDERO AND DEVIT! or "I'm reading this chapter right away, because Howard Link is in it! :D" But there are exceptions. Anthy and Utena are two of my favorite Utena characters, for example. I love nearly all the characters in that show to some extent, though. XD

I also imagine the Ark as containing a facsimile of the entire world, or something resembling it. I was thinking that after the Noahs kill everyone, they create the world anew. However, Rhode had that line about the Noahs being "sacrificial lambs," which has disturbing implications. Perhaps the Noahs have to be sacrificed for the world to be created anew. That would be kind of depressing. Or perhaps the Earl will say "World's gone, too bad!" and leave. (Can you imagine if RHODE was in charge of creating the new world? XD)

THANK YOU for that link. The concept and characterization are kinda different, but I enjoyed it anyway. I hope the artist finishes soon. Angsttwiiiins!

[identity profile] candelaria.livejournal.com 2008-08-30 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
I know! D: Usually they're loud, brash troublemakers or total wimps. Allen's so...not and that makes him awesome. omg I love Hoshino's work on clowns. haha sure I have a moment, go on if you like. X) lol I see what you mean, you should totally read chapter 170 then, it has Link in it, and he says something and Kanda tells him to 'STFU' and Link just gives him this look and goes 'Excuse me?' and it's so askdjs;lkSOCOOL LINK~ I never got into Utena, I think because the fandom is quite old and I just admire it from afar. XD

Though if that DOES happen for the world to be made anew...then who left is there? O.o I know when Rhode told Allen that 'God gave us and the Earl Akuma so we can destroy you all' and Allen goes 'That's no God, that's the Devil', Rhode goes 'It doesn't matter' so I suppose they don't really care WHAT happens so long as everything is destroyed. That WOULD be depressing if they all died though. D: lol the Earl, god knows where he even WAS for those thousands of years after the Flood. That's creepy. (Oh god yes, she'd dress everyone up really pretty and candy would be the new staple diet!) XD

Welcome. :D haha yeah it was a bit different but that's what made it interesting. I swear I'm on the edge of my seat wondering what will happen next with the angstytwins.

[identity profile] symbolism-egg.livejournal.com 2008-08-31 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, Ch. 170! I love it. Link! Miranda! Kanda and Link glaring at each other was quality.

Utena is awesome, so long as you don't mind never quite understanding what's going on. But in what other story is the princess also a prince, the witch also a princess, and the prince also the Devil?

Rhode's dialogue in that scene was another clue that the Noahs are Evil, in case the readers needed a clue. That's exactly what Rhodeworld is like.

Poor Devit. Must read end of comiiiic! D:

Now, the Pierrot Jesus lecture. As you've probably noticed, Allen's a Christ figure. He's pure, he wants to save everyone, is willing to sacrifice himself to do so, and he's destined to Save the World. However, he's the only manga character who's a clown-themed Christ figure. I've seen that theme in one other place, the novel Deep River by the Japanese Christian novelist Endou Shuusaku (best known for Silence). One of the motifs in this book was ridiculous clown-like figures who die or suffer in place of others. When Allen got his Crown Clown power-up, it reminded me strongly of this novel. Who knows if Hoshino's read Endou's works and was influenced by them, or if it's just a coincidence.

There you have it. (I think it would be cool if DGray was influenced by modern classics of Japanese literature.)

[identity profile] candelaria.livejournal.com 2008-08-31 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
Though I am unimpressed by Komui's new assistant, haha she seems mean. XD I feel sorry for him, slacking off for so long and now being made to do actual WORK...

:O Geezus, wow that's both amazing and complicated lol damn Utena I like understanding what's going on...otherwise I'll be forever thinking about it. XD

Or maybe that's just Rhode, being the First Child and all. She probably instructed the rest of them in her Evil ways. |D Well I'm sure Jasdevi and Skinn would appreciate to some extent. Sherril would love anything Rhode does. Tyki...not so much. XD

Huh. :O That's very true. And what's more what you just said reminded me of this book that was read to me in primary school The Clown of God by Tomie dePaola. It was based on a French legend and is very beautiful and sad. It's about this orphan boy who joins a troupe and becomes the finest juggler in all Italy, and dies as an old man on Christmas Eve performing his art one last time in front of a statue of the child Christ. When the priests find him, they are awed to see that the Christ is holding one of the balls the juggler dropped, smiling and acknowledging his gift. haha I don't think Hoshino ever read that book, but I think it's wonderful that Allen's a Pierrot/Christ figure.

Wow, if that's the case I think I can forgive Hoshino for taking all those weeks off on hiatus in order to do her research. X) One of the main reasons I got into DGM was because of all the fascinating religious subtext/history but that's just me. 8D;

[identity profile] symbolism-egg.livejournal.com 2008-08-31 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The hot secretary seems so random. XD

I enjoy books where I don't quite understand what's going on. I can think about it and attempt to figure it out, but even if I don't it's still mysterious and good!

Oh, one of my roommates had that Tomie dePaola book! There's that theme again. :)
